The day has arrived. April 15 marks the end of tax season and is the last day to file your personal income taxes on time.
If you don’t want to incur any penalties or interest for filing late, it is best that you make it to a tax office today to file your tax return.
What do I need to file my taxes?
Before you head to your tax office to take care of your return, you will need to get your documents ready.
Firstly, you will need to bring your personal identification as well as your families. You will need information like your date of birth, social security number, ID or Drivers License, the same information for your spouse and/or dependents, as well as documents to show that you care for any dependents you wish to claim.
Secondly, you will need to bring your work documents. This can include your W2 or 1099, or Profit and Loss statements if you own a business. These documents will show how much tax you paid during the year and help you accurately report your income and see how much refund you will receive or how much tax you owe.
Lastly, you will need to bring your bank information including routing and account number, as well as your method of payment for your tax preparer’s fee.
Will I get a refund?
If you are not sure whether or not you are going to receive a refund, there are a few simple ways to do so.
If you worked on a W2 and overpaid on your taxes through your checks during the year, it is likely you will get that money back as a refund.
If you have children or went to college, it is also likely that you will qualify for credit from your children or the money you spent on school.
If you don’t meet either of the above requirements, it is not likely that you will receive a refund on your tax return and could even owe. Consult a tax professional to see what is the best thing to do in your situation and make sure you claim all the credits you are eligible for.
