If you are a college student getting ready to file your taxes, you might be eligible for up to $2,000 in credits for your college tuition.
If you want to claim these credits, you are going to need a tax form from your school called 1098-T. This form will show the amount of tuition you paid and the amount of scholarship or financial aid you received.
If you are not sure how to get it, it is simple. Just follow these easy steps!
1. Log on to your student portal
To get your 1098-T form, you first need to log on to your student portal. This is the site that you use as a student to access common services like your classroom portal, payment portal, contact information for professors and counselors, and much more.
Please keep in mind, that this site is often different from the one you use to submit assignments and log on to your classes.
2. Navigate to your payment portal or financial center
Most schools have a separate portal that they use for processing payments for things like tuition, parking passes, and ID replacements.
In this portal, there are two common places where your form would be.
The first place is under the payment options in the center column. At the bottom, there should either be a place where you can navigate to a tax information page or directly download your 1098-T form.
The second place is on the left column menu, where there can be a link to your 1098-T form or a page with tax information and frequently asked questions.
3. Bring your form to a tax preparer
Once you have your form, bring it along with you when you come to file your taxes so that your tax preparer can claim your education credits.
You are allowed to claim up to $4,000 of college-related expenses if you were given a 1098-T for your first four years of post-secondary education. if you are in graduate school you can claim as many expenses as you had, but will receive a smaller portion back as refundable credit.
Please reach out to us or come by our office if you have any questions about how to make the most out of your tax returns and claim your education credit.
