What Do I Do If I Get A Call From The IRS?

Man on a phone call

Often, people receive calls from people claiming to be the IRS demanding money, bank information, or other personal information. If you receive one of these calls there are some important things to know.

The IRS does not call anyone

If someone calls claiming to be the IRS, they are not the IRS.

The IRS will only communicate with you via official correspondence through the post mail.

So, if you receive a call asking for any information from you: Do not give out any information over the phone or process any payments.

If you receive any calls or letters regarding tax amounts owed or your income tax return, make sure to take the following steps first before making any payments or sending any information.

1. Check your IRS account

If you are worried about the status of your refund, your current balance, your Identity Protection Pin, or any other related information, the best place to go is to your IRS account.

If you don’t have an account, creating one is easy. You just need to go to irs.gov and create an account using ID me. They will ask for identification and two-factor authentication to set up your account.

Once you are logged in you will have access to past tax records, any current balances, and any official notices from the IRS themselves. It is also on this site where you can directly make payments to your tax due balance if there is one.

2. Contact a professional
