Tax Day is Quickly Approaching

Tax preparation documents and a calculator

April is nearly here! For tax payers across the U.S., the due date of April 15th is coming up in a little over two weeks.

For tax payers looking to avoid penalties, late fees, and interest on any amounts owed to the IRS, it is time to file your taxes as soon as possible.

What do I need to bring?

To file your taxes, make sure you have all of your personal information handy. This includes your ID, your Social Security card, your address, and the information for any family members on your file, like a spouse or a dependent.

You will also want to bring any documents related to the income you had or the money you made in 2025. If you worked on a W2, bring that (as well as your last pay stub from 2025 if you want to see if you have qualified overtime from the One Big Beautiful Bill).

If you work as a contractor on a 1099 or own your own business, you will also want to bring proof of the income you made as well as proof of your expenses. This can include things like the mileage or money you spent on gas, your utilities, any supplies or uniforms, and other work-related expenses.

Will I get a bigger refund this year?

This year, bigger tax refunds are all over the news and we want to know: Will I get more money from my tax return for 2025?

That question depends a lot on your specific situation, but you may be getting a bigger refund if you meet some of the following conditions:

  • You earned Qualified Overtime
  • You received tips as part of your income
  • You purchased an American-made car in 2025 and paid interest on your car loan
  • You were born before 1962

If you meet any of those conditions, it is possible that your refund might be bigger… but it isn’t all as great as it seems.

The new changes to the tax law included in the One Big Beautiful Bill are primarily deductions not credits. This means that they can reduce your tax liability but not necessarily always mean you are getting money back.

In order to receive a refund you need to either 1) have overpaid on your W2 income taxes and get the extra tax money back or 2) qualify for a tax credit, such as the Child Tax Credit or the American Opportunity Tax Credit for college education expenses.
